I actually became aware of this book by a girl in one of our old youth groups. She was a huge fan of the series, and recommended them to me. I went online and found the compilation and ordered it. This is not a novel, it is more like a graphically illustrated comic book, BUT the writing is solid. Vasquez has a profound statement at the beginning about the "monster" locked inside of all of us. JTHM will always have a special place in the blackest, nastiest corner of my heart due to its being the first official comic book/graphic novel I ever read.
